The lawn is covered in a crisp frost. I still have two bushes covered in pink roses - but they always flower a second time in December. The lake is completely still - except for the ducks and moorhens dabbling about. I am baking, and as soon as its out the Aga I am off round the fields with Russ. Happy Christmas one and all.
I had seen it advertised in the local paper - and thought thats for me! It had been arranged by the National Trust. It was a wonderful day, and the fields were full of green veined orchids which range from white to purple. I took lots of photos and was really happy with the vast numbers. The green veined orchids will now be over and we are now getting lots of the Marsh Orchid appearing. These pictured are by our lake. June has breezed in and I am looking forward to the weather getting warmer.
In the damp parts of meadow they are there nodding their lovely little heads. When I was a child they flourished all over our water meadows. They are also known as Milkmaids or Lady's-smock. We used to call them Milkmaids... So now we await the cuckoo - who has become so rare - generally heard briefly before he makes his way north.
I know they are pretty, fluffy, cuddly - but a thorough pain! My bird feeders keep having these unwelcome visitors. My dog races up and down barking madly. I am tapping the window and saying "Go away" - or something like that. I know lots of you will have had these guests for years - but not here until now. Not only that I know there will be more before I turn round....
It is a beautiful location and I have added a picture. The gardens are gorgeous too. I can remember years ago visiting with a bus load of small children - and the priest hole turned out to be the main attraction. It was hidden under the fire place
Its been a nice few days anyway, and I want to share with you a picture which was taken by last week's guests. They are such a lovely couple and such keen photographers. The final day of their holiday, and they walked up through the Mangerton Valley and spotted this little fellow. Beautiful photography, thank you. Is there a more beautiful bird than the Kingfisher in this country?
There is evidence of toads! We have a grebe on the lake (this is a very unusual visitor for us). Also - an extra delight - a beautiful barn own gliding about the tops of the reeds. All very exciting. My neighbour's geese have started laying - so mine are generally a week or so behind. I have been out in the garden - just tidying things up, but I am aware that there is a cold snap forecast!! Hey ho.
Wednesday I went over the Symondsbury and was one of many producing Christmas wreaths, all moneys received going to the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance - a very worthy cause. Plus, of course, its great fun!! I have now made my own at home from the bits and pieces in the garden, so we are working our way up towards making things look the part. Happy Christmas one and all.
We have now rushed into November - foggy and extremely warm!! As soon as the fog has lifted it will be like a summer day. I want to share with you 3 pumpkins - which never reached the stage of being carved... I am considering what to do with them - there is pumpkin soup, jam and chutney - but now I have written this I realize I shall have to do all three. Autumn is such an "orange" time - the pumpkins are deep yellow, the marigolds are deep orange, - all the leaves dropping are different shades... So I have added a bit of lilac - I have a clematis which is flowering so beautifully - it deserved a photo - plus the odd sweetpea still to be had. Soon be firework night.
We have been very busy here at New House Farm - lots of guests, lots to do and now living off the proceeds of the vegetable garden - and did I mention that there are so many apples.... All meals need runner beans and apples - even beautiful blackberry and apple compote for breakfast. Below is a darling little longtailed tit on our feeder. We adore our birds.
Yes, I know mostly sparrows - but there are also gold finches, linnets, blue tits, green finches, black birds, robins (now voted our national bird), and wood peckers. And more. I can spend quite a lot of time watching them, identifying anything strange and trying to photograph them. Today, we have a Jay. Perhaps common to many, but its a first in our garden. He is seeing off everyone one and attacking the peanuts. Very beautiful, but possibly going to be a nuisance!
Firstly, my happy hens, who kindly provide the most delicious eggs for breakfast, and then my trio of geese that guard, hiss and huff above the lake! They are also providing lots of huge eggs at the moment. Happy days!
I have flowers in the garden that I have put on my Facebook page, so I thought since my pup is now a year old (!) - so where did that time go? - and still spends most of his time with something in his mouth. As he is definitely part of New House Farm - he deserves a mention. Here he is in the back garden with a hide ring!
About time too!
I was thinking this morning, and remembering, all of the calves and cattle that I have reared, we have reared, their offspring and how very fond I have been - on most occasions - of these large beasts. Now we have no cattle here at all now, which is sad but we could no longer afford to do it. I miss the very smell of them. But on a happier note, some people can afford these magnificent creatures - picture shows a beautiful Long Horn. We have sheep here at the moment, with their large lambs, and every evening there is a showing off period when these lambs gang together and race as fast as they can all over the place!!
Very Boring.... But now, February. I went for a walk yesterday afternoon, it was so nice along the River Asker. Spring is making a push and birds were calling for partners, the magpies were in their messy nests already, and flowers thrusting forward. Lots of celandines, lots of snowdrops, in clumps along the river bank and also primroses. Spring feels early... The nest box has occupants already - not the blue tits we had hoped for, but Mr and Mrs Sparrow.... All very pleasant for the half-term break.
My outside decs are up and glowing in the the dark, we still have to complete indoors - but bedrooms are being painted so it will all happen next week. Lovely bright weekend just gone - so a photo of Mangerton Lake in December attached. Happy Christmas one and all.
Russ and I went for a lovely walk yesterday along the banks of the River Asker which have been made up for walkers and cyclists. We met so many people we knew - because it was such a lovely warm day. This walk takes us past a tiny hump back bridge - called Happy Island. And it is - there were loads of children playing. A bit cloudier today - but still warm enough for me to get out in the garden and plant some mixed leaf lettuce in the polytunnel. I am attaching a photo taken by a friend who stayed a month or so ago - its a yellow wagtail. Brilliant photography.
Following a completely dry September its been raining. Russ and I have just come back from a little walk across the fields. He's had a lovely time! We've had some pheasant poults reared here this year, but their keeper was a little enthusiastic about keeping the grass down outside their pen, and managed to strim a hole (very small) in their enclosure. Naturally, all managed to escape!! Bit like Chicken Run. The keeper went out and purchased 90 more, and we are blessed with lots of pheasants roaming around. Something for the pup to chase! But on a different note, last night as we walked round the lake I saw a water vole. They are surprisingly large! This is the first year I have ever seen them. I have robbed a picture from the net to accompany this piece.
An absolutely beautiful day - and the farmer and I have been to the ploughing and hedging match a few miles away. I still have the smell of soil in my nose. It was held at Netherbury - a stunning village, and the views were magnificent. It took a long time to walk from one end to the other - as there were so many people we knew and had lots of little chats. I am comfortably weary now, and must do a little gardening. The farmer is going to barbecue some pork. What a pleasant end to September
I am sat here waiting for new guests to arrive. The sunshine is streaming through the windows - but we've just had a little shower. The garden has been producing really well, so I have made plum jam, piccallili, apple and marrow chutney, beetroots are wonderful, and the runner beans are now really meaning it.... The cucumbers have been so prolific that The Farmer has to eat at least one a day. The courgettes keep trying to become marrows when my back is turned, hence the chutney... I am now clearing the fruit cage - as new plans for next year. Melplash Show on Thursday, and I have been making loads of apple cakes for the honey tent. Its all go!
I have taken the pup out for a walk across the meadows this evening - now its a bit cooler. The farmer on the hill is loading his small trailer with small bales - in the old fashion way! When I was a child we used to drag in friends and family to load the bales - but this man was just on his own, working his way through 30 acres... One or two things spotted. It always heartens me to see the kingfisher, that flash of blue is so beautiful. I also saw a common sandpiper shooting across the lake. The martins and swallows were very lively this evening. Several clouds of small fry in the lake whizzing about. Its all action!

This is Seatown, which is a beautiful little bit of Dorset. This week I met up with friends and we walked from Chideock a short step down to the beach. It was a beautiful day - in fact a perfect day. The Anchor at Seatown has recently had a make over, and vast amounts of money have been spent enhancing the sitting area outside and more. We spent a lovely few hours in the sunshine, watching people in the sea, and on the beach. It was lovely. This picture is how the pub was before the revamp, you will have to visit to see what it looks like now.Jane's Blog at Mangerton Lakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14763044811803700443noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-399001360979025273.post-87789643097124988882014-06-14T02:18:00.001-07:002014-06-14T02:18:19.604-07:00Introducing RussWell, was there life before Russ? He has been with us now 3 weeks and is definitely part of the family... his toys litter the place, but that's not enough. He has about 10 minutes of complete naughtiness, then crashes out for a sleep. Totally adorable - but with sharp teeth...
